Personal History | Despite historically low fertility rates among Andorians, Ushio's parents' quartet was blessed with four children, and Ushio was one of them: Born in 2365, Ushio was the third child and second girl born to her parents' quartet. Ushio was of the Shen gender, just like her mother Jhozo. Ushio grew up on Andoria, and from a young age, she was enthralled by music. At the age of seven, she was given her first drumkit for the Andorian version of the human holiday Christmas, and she loved it until she broke it two years later at age nine. However, at that time, it was the height of the Dominion War, and materials were needed for the war effort, and Ushio's parents had to break the unfortunate news to their daughter that it would be a few years before she would be able to get a new drumkit. Deeply upset, Ushio put her feelings to paper and wrote her first song. Ushio's older sister Bev, feeling sorry for her little sister, let Ushio play with her guitar for the short term, and with the borrowed guitar, Ushio came up with a tune to put the lyrics to. As Ushio attended school, she gravitated towards music classes, and at age seventeen, Ushio and a few of her friends formed a heavy metal band named Ice-Breaking Battleship. While the band enjoyed success in its early years, Ushio's parents grew concerned, and when their daughter turned 18, they sat her down to discuss her future. During this discussion, Ushio's parents admitted that they were hoping that she would grow out of music and join the Andorian Defense Force as each of them had done in their youths. However, Ushio didn't like the idea of military service at all, but she did promise her parents that if Ice-Breaking Battleship didn't work out, she would do something philanthropic to balance the rock star stereotype that her parents seemed so concerned about. In 2386, when Ushio was twenty one, Ice-Breaking Battleship broke up due to founding members leaving the band and internal strife between old and new members. Making true to the promise she had made her parents, Ushio enrolled at Starfleet Academy, When she took the entrance exam, she decided that she wanted to be a doctor, and for her first two years in the Academy, she learned the basics of being a medical officer before specializing in Cardiology for her final two years. During her tenure at the Academy, Ushio was recruited by two cadets from Security; Patricia Cooke and Akira Kogami, to be the drummer for a blues band the two cadets were forming called the Soul Sisters. Blues music was a drastically different sound than the former heavy metal drummer was used to, but she made it work, and the Soul Sisters began to perform at local bars and restaurants in the San Francisco area. The Soul Sisters peaked when they performed at an Academy talent show, performing their rendition of "Sweet Home Chicago" to a packed Academy auditorium. The Soul Sisters proved to be a crowd favorite, as they were voted one of the best performances that night, and Patricia, Akira, Ushio, and the rest of the band members were awarded some well-earned luxury replicator rations. When most of the band members, including Ushio, graduated in the class of 2390, the Soul Sisters broke up, as its members were likely to be scattered across the fleet. However, for Ushio, graduation was not the end of the road, as she still had two more years ahead of her at Starfleet Medical Academy. However, as she began Starfleet Medical Academy, Ushio felt like she had just been going through the motions following the Soul Sisters' breakup. So, to reignite that spark, on a day with no classes, Ushio booked some holosuite time and proceeded to record an album-length demo tape. With the exception of keyboards on the more experimental tracks, which Ushio recruited the assistance of a holographic keyboardist to pull off, Ushio played all the instruments and sang. The demo tape wasn't heavy metal like her Ice-Breaking Battleship days, but it was considerably more rock-oriented than her drum work had been during her Soul Sisters tenure. The demo tape attracted the attention of Ushio's bunkmate, Miku Nakano. The two of them had previously worked together with the Soul Sisters, with Miku having been a bassist for the band. Miku curiously enquired one night when she heard Ushio playing the tape back and making notes on what she could improve if Ushio was planning to go solo in the aftermath of the Soul Sisters' breakup. Ushio said she might, if she couldn't recruit any band members with the demo tape. Miku replied that she might know a young drummer who might be interested, and before Ushio knew it, she was joined by Miku and her younger sister Itsuki, forming the core lineup of a new band, which Ushio decided to name the Ushaan-tors. The band's lineup consisted of Ushio on lead vocals and lead guitar, Miku on bass, and Itsuki on drums. In 2392, Itsuki wanted the Ushaan-tors to perform at Starfleet Academy's annual talent show, as a last hurrah before they all graduated and went their separate ways. However, as Ushio and Miku had both graduated from Starfleet Academy two years prior, the full band was not permitted to perform at the talent show. When her drummer was understandably upset by this, Ushio turned around and booked a stadium in San Francisco the night of the talent show. One way or another, Ushio was going to give Itsuki that one last night to be a rock star, and the Ushaan-tors performed what would be their final show for the next four years to great success. When Ushio graduated Starfleet Medical Academy in 2392, she was given the rank of Lieutenant JG and was assigned to the USS Tom Brady as a surgeon. The Brady was assigned to patrol duties near the border with the Gorn Hegemony, and more often than not saw skirmishes that frequently injured the crew, some to the degree that they required surgery. Ushio spent less than a year aboard the Brady before she put in a transfer request for a more generalized Medical Officer role, having decided that the steady surgical work was not worth the risks associated with operating near the Gorn Hegemony. Fortunately, Ushio didn't have to wait long before she was scooped up by the USS Kannapolis in her desired position. The Kannapolis was a more tranquil domestic posting, and for the four years she spent aboard, Ushio was able to greatly expand her portfolio, learning that there was more to being a doctor than performing surgery, and through her varied work aboard the Kannapolis, Ushio learned how to be more than just a good surgeon, but a good doctor as well. Ushio became a favorite among the medical staff of the Kannapolis, and when the Assistant Chief Medical Officer retired in 2394, Lieutenant Commander Michael Donington, the Chief Medical Officer, asked Ushio to be his new assistant. The promotion in position would also be accompanied by one in rank, to that of full Lieutenant. Ushio was honored to be chosen as replacement Assistant Chief, and accepted Donington's offer. For the two years Ushio spent at Donington's side, she began to get an idea for what it took to be a Chief Medical Officer. Donington was proud of Ushio's work, and told her one night that 'when she became a Chief someday, she would be a great one.' It turned out, Donington's words were more than just praise, as he had spent the last year they were together recommending Ushio for Chief Medical Officer positions, and in 2396, Starfleet came back with an opening for a Chief Medical Officer at Starbase Frontier, located near the Tholian Assembly. While Ushio was apprehensive that this would be a repeat of her Brady service, she decided to take the offer when she found out who the base's commanding officer was; someone who would make Patricia from the Soul Sisters squeal with jealousy: |
