Previously on Starbase Frontier...

"Can I help you, Lieutenant?" she asked, spotting Abi from across the room.

"Ah yes doctor," she said as she stepped in holding a PADD. "I was just wondering how you want us to proceed with these treatments. I know the Klingons have a 'different way' of treating burns. Especially since they refused dermal regeneration. So, I was wondering how should we proceed?"

And now the continuation:

"I've been giving that some thought," the Red-head sighed, folding my arms. "While a part of me is reluctant to go against the patient's wishes, the fact of the matter remains that when that scar tissue contracts, it could prevent normal movement, which could have the adverse side effect of hampering his duties."

Abi nodded. "That was my thinking too..."

"I'm thinking we're going to have to perform the procedure," the CMO stated. "We put the patient under anesthesia, do the dermal regenerations, and just tell him that his wounds healed naturally when he wakes up. For all he's concerned, that's the story, and that's all he needs to know. The only people who need to know about this outside of Medical are the Command Staff, and if Commander Tormek is wanting J'Tol back on duty so badly, he'll understand that some corners had to be cut in order to get there."

"Are you sure you want to do that?" Abi asked as she crossed her arms. "I mean, we can't lie to them. I know they're Klingons, but we if they find out we lied, its only going to make things get worse."

"Well, I have considered some alternative treatments, but they're not without their share of risks," the CMO explained. "For one, we could try something along the lines of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy, where we'd hook the patient up to a small pump to reduce atmospheric pressure in the wound. The problem with that, however, is two-fold; for one, the dressing changes can be pretty painful, and two, there's no guarantee the wounds will actually heal properly, given how extensive the damage to his skin tissue is. So that ultimately leaves us in an undesirable position: either we oblige in the patient's demands and risk half-assing it, or we do the job right and lie to his face."

Abigail sighed. "Maybe we should run this by Commander Tormek? He would know what to do..."

"You kidding? That man's a menace," the CMO objected. "If we were to leave it up to him, he'd have skipping the treatment and sending the patient on his merry way, regardless of whether or not he actually needs it."

"Still," Abi said in response. "He is their direct commanding officer. If they can't make that decision, he is the only one who can." She reminded the doctor.

The CMO sighed. "As much as I hate to admit it, you make a valid point," she remarked, typing up a message in her PADD before sending it off to Tormek. "Word of mouth is that Captain Izumi and Commander Tormek still have a few things to prepare ahead of the diplomatic function, so presuming he has the time between all of that, I'll speak to him about it in private. Until then, we're just going to have to keep Ensign J'Tol confined to sickbay; monitor his wounds, clean them every 6 hours to prevent infection, and turn him over every now and then to ensure he doesn't develop bedsores."

Abi nodded simply before leaving the office to go attend to the Ensign.

[Main Operations]

Kagami stepped out of her office and looked around the main Operations center. It was fairly quiet today, the usual quiet chatter between officers and beeping of consoles could be heard as she made her way to a turbolift door. As she walked she was reading a PADD she had brought with her.

Counselor Th'raanin stepped off of the turbolift and looked around to familiarize himself with the layout. Spotting the Captain he walked over to formally introduce himself.

"Captain Izumi, Counselor Th'raanin reporting for duty," Ashreth said formally, though not forcefully. Andorians had a way of speaking in a somewhat subdued manner unless provoked and the Counselor was no exception.

Kagami looked up from her PADD. She had been expecting the new Counselor today. "Ah hello Lieutenant." she said in response. "Join me in the turbolift, I'm on my way down to the Galleria right now," she told him indicating the turbolift doors with her PADD.

Chief Winters was making adjustments to the transceiver array when he overheard the conversation between the Captain and the Counselor.

“Pardon the interruption, Captain, Counselor. Nash Winters, Chief of Operations. Welcome aboard. Pleasure to meet you. You can call me Chief or Nash, if you prefer.”

At first Kagami hadn't noticed the other officer in the turbolift when they had entered. It made her jump slightly as he spoke. 'Too focused on the little things today huh Kagami...' she thought to herself as she turned to the Operations officer.

"Ah yes, Lieutenant Winters. I see you couldn't resist getting your hands dirty." Kagami said in response. "Well, it looks like I have both of you for the ride. Might as well make this a group reporting in right?"

“Always up to my elbows in something, sir. I was on my way to Deck 6. There are some power relays in the storage bays I need. No problem with a group effort, right?”, Winters commented.

"Of course, Captain," Th'Raanin nodded.

Commander Fletcher grabbed his Padd from the console he was working on and gave his farewell to the Captain, "Time for my inspection of the Kingfisher," he said, "I'll be down there if need me Captain. Anything you need from the ship?"

"Not at the moment. However, make sure she's ready at a moments notice. We don't know what we'll be facing out here" Kagami replied with a smile. 'It seems I'm the center of attention this morning...' she thought as she stepped towards the turbolift.

"Understood," Commander Fletcher responded as he headed towards the second turbolift to head down to the docking area.

"So Lieutenant. Tell me what you know about what this base represents and our mission out here." Kagami asked the Counsellor as she proceeded towards the Turbolift.

"The collaboration between Starfleet and the Klingon Defense Force, near the edge of Tholian territory and unexplored space, not to mention how much traffic you get out here," Th'raanin summarized. He understood that the Captain wanted to make sure that her Counselor understood the nuances of such a unique assignment.

The Counselor continued, "It's my understanding the mission here is what's always been at Starfleet's core, peace and exploration. Captain, I've been researching Starfleet and the Klingon's presence here of course, but I've also gone back and looked at what made the Bajoran/Starfleet joint operation on Deep Space Nine so successful. I hope I am not far off here, but I think the essence is mutual respect in authority, culture, laws. Though I am sure I'll learn more as I take on this role."

[Turbolift]

Stepping into the Turbolift, Kagami allowed time for the Andorian to enter. "Galleria, lower level," she said before turning to the new counselor.

"Ok," she said now that the three officers were now alone. "Well, you did get it right Counselor. This base is a collaboration of both Starfleet and the Klingon Defence Force. The Tholians are at our back gate, not to mention the Gorn Hegemony are just 'down the road' so to speak," she told them both. "Both of you will be paramount in keeping this base operational."

“Understood, Captain. I’ve been impressed with a couple of the Klingon officers, so far. They’re quick, thorough, and don’t hold back when they see anything even a micrometer out of spec. They attack the problem and get it solved. And they don’t have any qualms about taking orders from me, so that’s a plus.”

The Counselor turned to make eye contact with the Captain. "I look forward to the challenge, Captain. There is a lot of potential here in so many areas," he said solemnly. "I hope to serve you and this mission well."

"And a challenge you shall get." Kagami replied. "We are far from Federation Space. This whole area is known as 'The Pytonian Passage'. Its the new corridor to unexplored space. No doubt that some people will need a friendly face to confide in." She looked over towards the Operations Officer, Lieutenant Winters.

"That also applies for Operations. You'll be responsible for the day to day management of power, supplies, utilities and everything else. Not to mention assisting the Engineering Department in maintenance and repairs. Its a big job on a Starbase, even if it is only a small one." Kagami told him. "Although, it'll be harder since we have both Starfleet and Klingon Defence Force Supplies..."

“Of course, Captain. I was thinking about that, actually. I’d like to seriously look into assigning a Klingon Liaison officer to help out with just that. Help Ops sort out any issues from the Klingon side of things. Just an idea. But have no doubt, I can handle anything you throw at me. Except for gagh. Never touched the stuff and never will,” Winters said.

"Consider the Counselor's Office open as of today, Captain. I'm here and ready to get started right away," Ash commented earnestly.

“You can expect all systems running smoothly and operating at optimum levels. We’ll stay on top of everything. Count on it, ma’am,” Winters said assuredly.

The Turbolift came to a smooth stop and the doors swished open. "This is my stop." Kagami said to them both. "Be sure to get cleared by medical before reporting for duty tomorrow morning. Until then, have a look around and see what's where on the base." she paused as she took a step towards the door. "Oh, and welcome to Starbase Frontier." she said finally before walking out of the turbolift doors and onto the main level of the Galleria.

Chief Winters smiled politely at the Captain and Counselor. “See you around, Counselor,” he said as he continued down in the lift down to the storage bays.

Ash nodded to himself and went to check out his new office space.
